FDM Training and Sign-Off Period

Pros

You can get a placement with a really good company

Cons

Training is unpaid. The majority of the trainees are forced to wait 2-3 months after their sign-off date, which in some cases adds up to 6 months. It is cruel that they make you attend the academy full-time for so long(furthermore, the last three month you have nothing to do) without being paid and when you ask if you can get a part-time job they tell you that you have signed a contract.

I’m sorry to hear that you are not enjoying your time with FDM. We don’t make any money from having trainees in-house and therefore as a business it is in our interest to place everyone as soon as possible, and some are even placed before they complete the training so that they can go straight on to their placement. However, some people take a little longer to secure a placement. Your feedback is important to us and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you. Please come and see me or email Jonathan.Young@fdmgroup.com . In the meantime, if you are in the Academy waiting for a placement can I suggest that you take advantage of the further training and coaching that is available – including classroom based training, pluralsight and so on. Pros

As a college grad without much experience in programming, the training at FDM really prepared me for life on site at Fannie Mae as a software developer! The trainers really cared about our success and were very knowledgable about the subject they were teaching. Not only were the technical skills valuable, but the professional skills training prepared me for any future interviews I may have. FDM allows you the opportunity to get your foot in the door to make an impression that could turn you from being a contractor with a client into a full time employee after your 2 year contract. Overall great experience and very happy with where I have been placed and felt very prepared before going on site.

Cons

Required to wear business professional clothes in training when we could dress casually once on site

Pros

You get placed at great clients in roles that would not be possible if you were to apply through the standard process. Even though the pay is not great, after the two years it is likely that you will be made permanent at the client and salary rises significantly. You also have some really good account managers and trainers who genuinely want you to succeed.

Cons

The pay is not great and some of the account managers will try and shoehorn you into a role that isn't the best fit.
