Pros

Great coworkers, good food, Madison is a really cool city.

Cons

Work-life balance is terrible. Expectations for customer support are unrealistic and there is support for challenges beyond your expertise is hit or miss. Upper management has made it very clear that they do not have their employees best interests at heart, the latest example being the push for employees to return to campus in the midst of a pandemic with virtually no evidence that productivity has declined since allowing employees to work from home. The response to parents who are uncertain they would be able to find child care was "take a pay cut and work part time or take a leave of absence, but no work from home." My experience has been that the personal fulfillment of helping healthcare systems is not what it was made out to be by recruiters, with most of the job being trying to find out why things are broken or how to make something work in a way other than it was designed for, and not actually partaking in improving patient health or the patient experience.

Pros

Good way for people with non-tech backgrounds to get into tech. QA work can be interesting if you’re on a project/team you like. There are opportunities to try out different responsibilities to see what you like doing the most. Health insurance benefits are great.

Cons

COVID-19 response has been disappointing. They are planning to bring all employees back between July-Aug, despite recommendations from public health authorities that we work remotely as much as possible. They don’t seem to care about employee health or safety. When employees have publicly (on an internal question forum) asked about the company’s COVID response/plan, questions they don’t want to answer are simply deleted. There is no transparency or trust from upper management. Your experience can depend greatly on your Team Leader. If you don’t stand up for yourself, you can easily become overwhelmed with the amount of work. You have to be in charge of advocating for your own work/life balance, but many (especially newer) employees feel like they can’t say no and easily become overworked. QA compensation is low for the number of different responsibilities we are expected to do.

Pros

Hiring of people with non-technical backgrounds for some positions can help folks without a software degree get started in a tech career. Excellent healthcare and decent pay

Cons

Upper management is fully out of touch with employees’ concerns, to the point where it no longer feels like employee happiness is in any way a priority. Epic’s philosophy seems to be that employees are replaceable by new grads out of school, and tenured employees aren’t important to keep. Paid maternity leave is among the industry’s worst, vacation time is stingy, and the company’s “flat structure” is another way of saying that promotions don’t include pay raises, so there’s little meaningful career growth within the company. As other reviews have noted, the COVID response has thrown higher-ups’ disregard for employees into greater relief, with new hires forced to work from work for over a month despite training being virtual and the CEO declaring that parents need to start looking for childcare because the company policy won’t take school closures into effect. The overall culture of the company is toxic and anxiety-inducing, and management’s conviction that it should be maintained via in person work at a risk to employee health is indicative of a core flaw with how the CEO and other major decision makers see employees.
