Pros

Gratis, acquiring product knowledge, learning how to work under pressure

Cons

Horrible company if you are a student. Part time employees are only allowed to block off one day a week, because they need availabilities FOR 6 days of the week, and ALL EMPLOYEES must be available Friday and both Saturday and Sunday. It doesn’t matter if you have classes in the morning, they’ll still expect availabilities for at least two opening shifts of the week and two closing shifts, excluding the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They always max out your hours which for part time is 29 but they gave me sometimes 34 hours even during the semester. During summer, they would give you 40 hours a week, but that’s less bad because at least people are free. At my particular location, the management was absolutely horrible and our turnover rate was incredibly high. They were very mean with the schedule and had no issues having you come into work 10 days in a row simply because it’s on two different weeks. One of my part-time coworkers didn’t have two days off in a row for three months straight, even after begging for it multiple times. They do a lot of micromanaging and you have to ask for permission for every single thing you do, including to drink water. If you work at the mall, or on a main street, you will ALWAYS be understaffed. and they will push KPI’s on you, but they don’t give you commission. So you have a target, but no commission…. Also, they kind of asked you to do low-key shady things, like trick people into giving you their email for sending the receipt, but actually sign them up to be an insider member. NEVER GIVE THE CASHIER YOUR EMAIL IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SIGNED UP. Also, loss prevention watches you like a hawk. At my location, the manager would write us up for swatching any of the products on ourselves, which is crazy seeing his customers can return any item that’s been opened within 30 days…. And lastly, if there are any changes to opening hours, for example, a parade or some event in your area, they are likely to stay open for longer, and without a single warning, they will book you to cover hours that you didn’t even know existed on the schedule. They will also do that for any corporate visit which happens honestly every two weeks for some reason they’ll have you deep clean the store while expecting you to attend to customers and on a day for example where you would usually close at seven and clean until eight they will without warning book you until 10 PM so you can deep clean the whole store. Yet if you go to them and explain to them that you can’t because you made plans, they’ll make it your fault and make you have to find somebody to replace you. And don’t be fooled if they tell you that “they need certain availabilities from you because of the policy but just write them an email and I’ll do their best accommodate you.” it’s a lie. They won’t give a damn matter-of-fact, it’s almost like they do it on purpose to book you exactly how you asked them not to. No space for a promotion, especially with managers have favorites.

Pros

Friendly, knowledgeable, supportive coworkers. Management is generally pretty good. You get to work with all the fun products and learn directly from brand reps. And the customers are there to learn about the products - and you get to talk to them about the best products. If you're excited about Sephora, go apply!

Cons

Hours vary based on the time of the year.
