Pros

Good pay, fair bonus structure, stock options, company vehicle, good peers and store managers who really want to help the customer.

Cons

I worked as a DM at a previous company, and peers there said “no work life balance” it was because they were inefficient. This company truly gives you no work/life balance. 5.5 days expected in stores, reports due Sunday, conference calls Sunday and sometimes as early as 6:30am. DMs are glorified store managers. Expected to be in the store to fix years of mismanagement in weeks and use your salary to make up for the fact they don’t schedule enough hours. Expect to throw freight. Zero support. In 11 months there I had 5 bosses (RDs) and moved from #13th most tenured in my region to #5. Training is non existent, especially among store personnel who get zero training hours. Store managers get ideally two weeks with at training manager, but with the amount of turnover at DG that doesn’t always happen. Plus two weeks is not enough to learn everything. Total disconnect from corporate and the field. SMs are on hold for over an hour to reach HR or store support, or take months to fix maintenance issues including restrooms that have human waste. Our managers usually work 60-70, as their 50 hour expected workweek is usually impossibly to hit due to hours restrictions and call offs due to thin labor models.

Pros

The job itself is easy. The cash register, stocking (especially the totes and dry truck) and cleaning are so simple however there are certain things that make it difficult, although the work itself is not (under the right circumstances.)

Cons

They never have enough people on shift so it’s always difficult to get things done. It seems like all the managers I know from the store I worked at and the surrounding ones are all so deep into drama it made me wonder if I was back in high school. Dry truck always seems to bring far too much and the stores are so little that overstock is a huge issue here. The reason I ultimately left was due to severe mistreatment and some safety concerns I had regarding some past experiences. I am very glad I left and I would not ever go back.
