Merrill is okay...

Pros

Great co-workers, really good benefits (compared to others in the area).

Cons

Difficult to advance. The only way to advance is to be buddies with the hiring manager, which leads to horribly unqualified people being put into positions that they cannot handle (mainly management). Merrill "prides" itself on hiring within, but it's completely untrue. Recently there was a large lay-off (100+ people) and 2 job positions were opened under a different division. Instead of hiring perfectly qualified individuals, that applied for the positions, the manager filled both from outside the company. Office politics are the worst, so much drama and gossip from all levels. Way too much middle-management, leading to micro-managing of employees. My former manager sat on Facebook and shopped online all day, and took credit for the hard work that the rest of the team did. The new CEO has been selling off pieces of the core business for 2+ years....not sure what Merrill is anymore.

Pros

used to be a WFH, pay was acceptable

Cons

Unfortunately, it became evident that misconduct was often silenced, especially when it involved leadership figures, which created an unsafe and unethical environment. Salary increases were consistently withheld from those who were not part of the leadership circle. Interviews were conducted by employees rather than trained professionals, which often meant that highly qualified candidates were overlooked if they appeared more competent than the interviewer. A shift toward a control-focused culture was abruptly introduced by a single leader, and the C-level executives opted to support his approach without further assessment

Pros

The new office is modern and has lots of light. No extra hours. Limited flexibility to change shifts.

Cons

I was working for less than a year at Merrill and I must admit, I have never felt so frustrated in my life. This is the perfect job for people with no aspirations and no willingness to learn or develope a carreer. There is no progression path other than becoming a senior project manager, which does not really change the daily duties. The line management does not listen and does not know how to engage and motivate people. Some of the colleagues are more worried about gossiping around than doing their own job, which creates a toxic atmosphere. For future joiners, if you are told that you can take holidays on bank holidays, it is false. Regarding the organazitation, it seems that they do not appreciate the people working in there. The benefits are really limited and nothing special. There is an ego culture where team working is far away to be a reality. Promotion opportunities are mostly based on the time you have been working in there and not based on the quality of your job. Great job for people who suffers under pressure and is not motivated.
