Pros

Good company if you want to cruise along and collect a paycheck. Laid back and slow pace of work. People are usually nice. Low cost of living in Columbus. Work life balance is tilted more towards the life part! Fosters diversity. Columbus has a good international community for the size of town it is.

Cons

- not much room for breakthrough innovation - everyone drinks the 6 sigma cool aid. It's like an "emperor with no clothes". Everyone knows its a farce but you cant say it as it is. - 20% of the employees really make a difference, the other 80% are there to cheer on - all work locations are in boring places - jamestown ny, mineral point wi, rocky mount nc, etc. - limited growth opportunities - low pay

Company wants to improve and change

Pros

All my comments are really dependent on the team and organization you are part of. Most of the roles I have held in the company have been in areas which value work life balance, driving results, and executing on our plans. Benefits package is good overall, with bonuses paid most years (even if there is a RIF). The company wants to improve and change to evolve how business is done to be more efficient. From a (physical) product introduction the company does good on developing and releasing new product for the customer base and generally is focused on driving value to the customer.

Cons

Every 3 years there has been a RIF in the company over the last decade. While the businesses the company is in are cyclical, a RIF usually is 10-20% of the professional workforce. There are a lot of long-timers in the company and that leads to a lot of 'not how we do things around here' thinking in the work. There is a huge challenge with making change and implementing the big programs which are the focus of leaders. For implementing major system/business process programs the company continues to fail. There have been 3 major programs (global in scope and 5+ year execution plans) which have been cancelled/written off/put on hold for more than 5 years, and no accountability to any of the leaders who are over those areas. There are many levels of management, making decisions small in scope and driving significant amount of 'consensus' meetings to get anything done. Finally, there are lots of opportunities to grow your career, but only if you're willing to be located in Columbus, IN (small town south of Indianapolis).
