Some good people but poor management and unfair treatment of employees

Pros

Caterpillar are fairly approachable when it comes to flexible working / work life balance. There are some very nice, professional people working for Caterpillar who are supportive and willing to go that extra mile for a colleague or a customer.

Cons

Perhaps it very much depends on where you work within Caterpillar, who you work with and how the reporting structure works. In my experience, which overall has been fairly poor, it's seems to be about who you know and not what you know. There are people in positions who should not be in these roles and are completely overpaid for what they do, they often claim credit for ideas put forward or for work that is done to a high standard by those on lower grades than themselves. The company prides themselves on safety, including 'emotional safety'. I have both witnessed and experienced situations where this value does not ring true at all. Myself and others have seen good, experienced, competent people leave the company because they have been taken advantage of, their 'emotional safety' doesn't seem to have been of any real concern and there have been no career or development opportunities.

Pros

Good compensation if you reach the appropriate level.

Cons

Poor at treating people with respect. Not very transparent to the general workforce and does not communicate well. Many things are discovered via local media that should be announced internally. Also department level leaders and executives not held to the same ethical standards as regular workers. They abuse rules that others must follow especially during times of austerity.

Pros

Global company that offers many opportunities for travel as well as a good benefits package for expats. Market leader in the construction equipment industry.

Cons

Tends to relocate employees frequently without much regard for their personal situation. Rewards people who spend the most time in internal networking and self-promotion, rather than people with great results.
