Pros

Peoria is a great place to raise a family. The cost of living is low, and you can make a good living on a Caterpillar salary.

Cons

Cat managers are chosen, trained, groomed, and highly incented to be shrewd business leaders. They will do whatever it takes to make Cat successful in any business climate. Where other American manufacturers have fallen in decline, Cat is a global powerhouse. But don't think for a second that you are anything more than a piece of meat. If it's you or Cat's survival, you will be gone so fast your head will spin. The culture is generally Midwestern hospitable, but duck for cover in a recession! Work life balance goes out the window!

Pros

Job Security if you work hard and are recognized. Benefit were good but deteriorated after 2006. Good opportunities if your willing to travel abroad. Great coworker and people in general. Some upper managers are difficult to work with and communicate poorly. Had a great retirement plan but modified this in 2006. Medical, dental and prescription drug benefits are still good. These were best in the industry, but like all large companies CAT has reduced it's benefit package to now just average. Still a good large manufacturing company to work for.

Cons

The more you do the more work is loaded on you. Little recognition from upper management for a job well done. Too many SMART Goals and Corporate Goals keep changing. In some areas Quantity is emphasized over Quality.
