Pros

CarMax takes care of their employees during crisis. They reward them with food benefits by feeding the company when they hit numbers. They have a Treat Associates with Respect Policy and management for the most part is good.

Cons

I've worked in different areas of CarMax but my final destination was a service writer. I was bought into the idea that I'd be set up for success but we are expected to take up to 15 appointments daily with two technicians who get paid hourly Customer wait time for appointment is outrageous and sales and service do not have a good partnership at CarMax. Service writers feel the wrath of customers because of what sales associates promise them. they are constrained to a limited amount of time per appointment for customers with only two technicians on hand. They have to make daily calls and explain why each customer's car is not finished yet as the process is gone through and customers could be waiting up to a month to finally have their vehicle complete. Service writers are not included in company Communications meetings and morale is low. The pay is not worth the level of stress that is put on the service department. CarMax a wonderful company but the service department is constantly overlooked and underappreciated.

Pros

Good training, good employee discount

Cons

I resigned after 3 years. The management only cares about the growing the dealership not the employee. They will cut a salesperson out of a deal on a heartbeat. Pay is far below industry norm. Lots of time wasted doing apprasals

Pros

Excellent training program - I had zero sales experience prior to working at CarMax. Their training program covered the basics, and their environment/culture made it easy to approach anyone for help or feedback.

Cons

As a sales consultant, you must work retail hours. If you don't like working nights or EVERY weekend, then it isn't the job for you. Also, it is flat rate commission pay - their commission rate has remained the same since the early to 2000s (could be better). Furthermore, in order to make decent money, expect to put in a few 12 hour days each week. Because it is commission, you will sometimes face scenarios where you'll spend a lot of time with customers who CAN'T buy a car, for one reason or another, which is time wasted. You are also expected to answer the store phones for 3 hours a day and respond to web leads. Many of the phone calls during this time are not sales related, so you are essentially acting as a secretary during that time, while not getting paid.
