Pros

CarMax has continuously tried to improve themselves. The company management is open to feedback from the line level associates. The training programs and focus are top notch and are geared towards growing and developing the talented team members. The best thing working at CarMax was the work life balance if you are a Manager. They have a "Time Away" policy that is very flexible.

Cons

You can cap out in compensation and obtaining a promotion can be difficult if you are not able to relocate. You can be branded at CarMax as "not a growth candidate" making it near impossible to grow your carrer. CarMax has become extremely process driven to the point that any deviation from the process is highly frowned upon and I feel this decreased the associates ability to make decisions.

Company Culture

Pros

Pleasant work environment. Everyone treats everyone with respect and is nice (for the most part, at least at my location). Lots of little nice things the company does for the employees. High focus on giving employees recognition, which I found very positive and still seems to be rare to find. After working there for 4 years and leaving for a better paying job, I really missed the positive working environment. Lots of areas to move around in, can go from sales to finance office, move up the ladder, plenty of opportunities for growth. Open door policy.

Cons

Some managers get a little bit too comfortable in their jobs and may not set the best example at times. Needs a more uniform approach. Some managers work way harder then others, or some may be much more approachable then others. Pay structure for sales people could use some serious improvement. Can be very stressful to maintain adequate sales to live from.
