Pros

Scale at which Amazon operates in truly impressive. Lots of flexibility of moving internally. Opportunity to work on all kinds of different problems (high throughput, low latency system, web-scale data, machine learning, robotics, hardware, infrastructure-as-a-service - to name a few).

Cons

Compensation structure is different from other companies (e.g. no annual bonus).

Pros

There are many good things about a company this large: lots of opportunities, lots of impact, lots of support.

Cons

As the company has grown into a behemoth, it is struggling to maintain any part of its Day 1 motto. Things throughout the company are buried in process and political turf wars. Separately, the compensation philosophy is simply stupid: there is no real connection between performance and compensation (it's overwhelmed by the stock price fluctuations).

Pros

Leadership cares about its employees! Being part of the leadership team, I can see directly how this works, and I must say, I have never been at a company, large or small, that cares about its employees this much. Plus, it does so as objectively as possible. Most places I have been, I see promotions and annual reviews as highly subjective processes, but that is not the case here, we try to remove that subjectivity as much as possible. There is a high bar here, ensuring only top tier people. If you want to try something new, the company is very supportive to move within the company, to try out a different business line or different technology stack.

Cons

This is not the place for all people. You need to be able to work well within an ambiguous problem space, own what you do, and care about the customers (internal and external) you support. If you want a job where somebody else manages what you must do day in and day out, and you don't have to think about it yourself, you may want to find a different company.
