I applied online and heard back from a recruiter out in San Francisco within 2 weeks or so? Initial screen was fine. It was more like a casual conversation than an interview: asked about my interest in Uber, my background, some behavioral questions. Overall, not at all difficult.
I heard back and received their "creative assignment" as the next step in the process. It was a bit time consuming since I actually made it look good, but it's clear they want to be able to use it to actually see how you would do in the role. After reading some of the reviews on here, I just want say that it's silly to think that a company with such brand recognition already are using this to "steal ideas." Think about it... you're interviewing against so many people who probably have similar backgrounds (marketing, public relations, writing, etc) so this is obviously their way to move the strongest forward. So my advice here: actually show them what you can do and that you can do it well if you want any chance at being the next community manager.
I heard back after a couple weeks that they liked my creative and so I was scheduled for a second phone interview with the lead community manager (a similar behavioral screen). That went well as I then got scheduled to come into the office for in an in-person interview. I met a couple people from the team, had a take home assignment, returned it, and heard back fairly soon after my visit that I was given an offer.
The whole process was lengthy, but I assume thats how you can show you are willing to commit and that you are the right person to choose. My advice if you want to be hired is to really bring your A game, get along with who you speak with, be ready with ideas to share that show you are smart and creative, and know about Uber. This should all be common sense though. So best of luck.
