I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Tesla (Fremont, CA) in Jan 2016
Interview
Went in to Volt Staffing office and was given appointment to take a test given across the street from the Tesla factory. Simple mechanical test with nuts, bolts, and washers to be assembled in a particular order. After the test I interviewed with a Tesla employee who asked about the past experience on my resume.

Interview
Apply through staffing company. Get a call to interview a few week later. There are a lot of people went to the interview also. First, they test your skill on using tool like screwdriver, bolts and nut. Just make sure you know how to convert centimeter to millimeter.
Next, you will wait to get interview by one of their hiring staff. You don't need to worry about technical question or anything. They just ask simple behavior question like why Tesla? Strong and weakness? Basically show you are committed to work there. IMPORTANT: they do NOT care much about you and your resume, if you get hired, they will assign you to whatever slot they needed.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Tesla in Jul 2015
Interview
I was first interviewed for the position last May 27th for the skill test and 1-on-1 interview which took about a couple of hours. Next was in June 5th where a panel interview was held by different manufacturing departments which 3 department heads have talked to me. And lastly, a background check was given to all us who advanced after the the panel interview. The interview process was just right and somewhat easy.
Last August, the recruiter informed me that a department was considering me for the job but they referred to their Energy dep't who'll be conducting an interview. But the day before the interview, the recruiter cancelled it because the department was busy but if their is an interview, I'll be the first in line to be interviewed. And I was referred to another recruiter from the remanufacturing team within the company. But I think I'm not qualified for the minimum req'ts.
Last month, the recruiting team emailed me that I've been considered for a position of production associate that they will contact me if there is an opening. I'm very hopeful they'll contact me.
