I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in May 2017
Interview
Applied online. Got emailed for the first phone screening with the recruiter about 3 weeks after applying but she actually contacted me for a position that was different than the one I applied for. After the initial phone interview, I had to complete an online assessment (mostly personality) and submit some written answers (short essay style). About 2 weeks later, a second phone interview was scheduled. After that I was invited for an in-person interview in Seattle which was scheduled about a month after my last phone interview. The in person interview lasted 3 hours. The next day after my in-person interview, I received an invite for a 2 hour follow up interview with 2 people.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Amazon (Luxembourg) in Jul 2016
Interview
The interview process started by a 40 minute phone interview, where at the beginning the interviewer briefly told me about the role. Then they asked some standard questions about my previous experience relating to the role and my motivation to work for Amazon. Next, I was invited to a 4-hour on-site interview in Luxembourg. There were 4 interviewers who were all very friendly and made me feel at ease. They did, however, ask very standardized, competency based questions, and were taking detailed notes of my answers. There were 4 separate interviews with 15 minute breaks in between each of them. What they expect as answers are real stories from your previous professional experience.
