Understanding the specifics of a cover letter for a CV

A cover letter for a CV is an essential component of the job application process for academic, research, and other positions. Here we will find out what a CV cover letter is, why it is essential to include it in your job application and review some examples of CV cover letters.

What is a CV covering letter?

A CV covering letter is an introductory letter that you customarily include with your curriculum vitae (CV) when you apply for a job. It can help you give more details about your relevant experience and the information listed in your resume, possibly persuading the recruiter to give you consideration.  It is typically half page or one page in length.

What should you include in a cover letter for a CV?

It is essential to tailor your cover letter for your CV to match the specific requirements of the company you are approaching for a job. Some companies post their expectations, while others will require you to do some research. Make sure to provide tailored information in the letter about your qualifications for the specific job and your interest in working for the company. Avoid repeating what you have already included in your CV. Instead, review the job advertisement and make a note of your most relevant skills and work experience. Focus on a few that align with yours and talk about those in your letter.

To decide what to include, first research the following:

  • The company business, culture, values, and market position
  • News and trends related to the company
  • The job responsibilities
  • The person who will be reading and responding to the letter and their work position in the company

Having this information will help you to customize the covering letter to suit the company.

Here is what you should include in your CV cover letter:

  • Brief and well-structured content
  • Explanation of how your experience will help you succeed in the role
  • Reference to the job advertisement
  • Any specifically required information
  • Outline of the current situation
  • Information about yourself and your interest in the job and company
  • Your eligibility for the work position
  • Reiteration of your interest
  • Offer to get back to the recruiter by email or phone
  • A polite thank you for reading the letter

Ensure that your CV letter is free of grammatical errors and unnecessary information. Depending on the employer’s instruction, you can send the CV cover letter by email, as an email attachment, upload it online, or mail a copy.

For an email CV letter, include your name and job title in the subject line and write the CV letter in the email body. Use an easily readable font like Verdana, Courier New, or Times New Roman. Include your phone number, email address, and website address, if you have one, below your name at the end of the letter.
