Debunking the Myth

Pros

Very few good 3rd party collaborators who bring added value to the business. If you're knowledge-hungry you'll gain something, of your own volition.

Cons

Pretty much everything else. A lifer/dinosaur mentality that's been cultivating for the past 25 years, while recruiting a huge number of new people at the same time with no infrastructure, training or even desks in place, for that matter. No orientation/handover/induction processes in place, it's all "sink or swim" but without the slightest guidance/support. Hot desking - aka literally working in the corridors - has been baptised "smart working"(!). If you're not there by 7am, good luck finding a parking spot - you then have to drive at least 2 miles - if you're lucky and don't have to go an extra 5 miles to the airport - to a park and ride, get the shuttle bus and arrive at work at 9 - 9:30. Very productive...! I won't even begin to talk about the Line Managers, most of whom don't even have a degree, much less possess any people management skills. Work recognition absolutely non-existent, it's all about politics and personal preferences. 50-60 hours' work a week and not even a good word, not to mention overtime or bonus or a salary increase. No meritocracy whatsoever - I'm being literal when I say a Senior Manager of 20+ years in JLR had no idea what the word meant (!) Among the top 2 worst professional experiences in my entire life, if not the first.

Pros

Salary is competitive especially outside of London Iconic product (which you never get anywhere near) Discount on company and Ford products International travel opportunities

Cons

Iconic company and brand from the outside but riddled with problems. No on the job induction for new hires, meaning they are left to sink and often get metaphorically whipped by management for things they have not done as they didn't know they either had to do it/not do it OR don't know how to do it. Huge amount of infighting and "I'm alright Jack" attitude. Management style from the 1980s - huge degree of micromanagement and lack of trust in what are good quality, very hard working and under pressure staff. Feels like you're at school and constantly being watched/criticised. Flexibility on hours required (i.e. To do way more than contracted) - root cause lack of direction from senior managers upwards, though no flexibility on their behalf if you occasionally need it. Antiquated systems and process - transformation is often talked about but is actually just bringing things up to the basic level they should be. Multiple incorrect data sources on which you have to rely to make business decisions. The oddest thing is that management do not see the dysfunctional nature of the business though those joining the business can quickly see the inherent issues. Site safety at Gaydon is non-existent and no-one seems to care that the construction zone is a death waiting to happen. Good staff soon get fed up and leave meaning huge level of turnover. There is an annual staff feedback survey which has got progressively worse results however management are quick to 'justify' their scores and blame everyone/everything else but themselves when in most cases this is the first place they should be looking. Avoid at all costs.
