Pros

Good pay many talented people , big budgets, great headquarters, good benefits decent training opportunities. Low chance of layoffs

Cons

The caf team's egos are so big they can no longer see how bad some of their solutions are. The need for 24/7 support arises from poor design and implementation. They don't bother to do basic design good practices like normalization. The developer who is on call fixes crappy code by manually running jobs or running untested code right in production without even backing data up. It's also a lot like swimming with sharks. They have created a culture of the in group and the out group. My manager actually talked to me about my co-workers weaknesses in a way I found extremely unprofessional. Stay away from the finance group but I think some of the other teams are better. Carmax is kinda sad they were cutting edge but they are falling behind and every competitor is now doing the things that used to give carmax competitive advantage. They have grown into large corporation that's slow to act.

Pros

The only "pro" is the paycheck.

Cons

CarMax's Home Office is an awful environment. The majority of associates are backstabbing and petty. The space is in desperate need of refreshing (your carpet is disgusting), but the company cannot afford to update the office, which is sad and a significant indicator of cash flows issues. The overall HR policy and approach are archaic and non-relevant to today's standards. The average competency level for most associates is devastatingly low; "job skills" are stagnant because folks are neither permitted nor encouraged to move around and develop new strengths or perspectives. Frankly, I personally feel bad for anyone who is stuck at CarMax; most associates feel just that way - "stuck". In reality, almost everyone there would jump at the chance to join another company. The only "happy" associates are the lifers without valuable skill sets who continue to perpetuate the uniquely-terrible corporate culture that has been allowed to take hold and spread throughout the rotting building.

Pros

Tons of growth opportunities, great work life balance. I have worked in several locations around the US and at the Home Office and all of my managers have been invested in my growth and care about me as a person. Benefits are great and keep getting better. Very strong commitment to evolving with the current environment and with Diversity and Inclusion. Starting with CarMax you can expect hands on training to help you navigate your new role, would recommend to anyone!

Cons

Retail hours in the stores can be a lot
