Pros

- Great product in Freestyle Libre - some great managers and fellow employees - part of Abbott, so options elsewhere

Cons

- scapegoating, political, CYA culture - low employee morale - high workload and little respect for work life balance - petty cost cutting whilst wasting millions - BS management double speak around "scary good" and "blue ocean strategy" that most people don't understand and is inconsistent with general micro-management - most employees increasingly marginalized at the expense of few so called high performers, creating an unjust, uncooperative and resentful atmosphere - very little opportunities for career progression - management look after themselves well with perks, fancy hotels and unncessary overseas travel - disastrous last year versus targets tells you management don't have a clue

Pros

The content of the work is fantastic! Very interesting product line - one can develop lots of technical expertise if given the chance. If your manager is normal, people can do well. It's very tempting to join this organization given what you think your opportunities might be.

Cons

Product line is complex and takes a while to master. Lots of reports of high turnover in the year prior to my arrival (ie. most of the clinical department) Management seems to be pathologically delusional. They harp endlessly how much work there is and how important each goal is to achieve, but maintain that the work force must stay lean. The result for me after 6 months was constant badgering that I wasn't doing enough independently nor enough projects simultaneously. I had no onboarding and had to create an onboarding checklist tool for management. But my lack of access to critical tools needed to do my job did not eliminate the criticism from management. There is no pleasing these people. They do not invest in cultivating new people in the organization; they waste Abbott resources through inefficient hiring and firing. People just disappear from this place.

Poor leadership good pay

Pros

Pay is good, benefits are ok (3 weeks plus you can buy a fourth, unlimited sick), meet some nice people

Cons

The CEO sends out email blasts to everyone angry and punitive only to find out his data is incorrect, and the VP has to send a retraction. Management does what they’re told - too many times I hear upper managers remark how they got their position “by just asking”, while the rest of us get nothing for our successes and innovation. Women managers were the worst - created a hostile work environment in order to “fit in”. Also the CEO expects double growth with the constant “but we aren’t doubling staff” comment. Many departments at their limit already. It’s all about the investors now and image, and not human health. Look at the Abbott commercials now - that don’t even make sense.
