Pros

It's a large company so you have a lot of exposure to different audiences, businesses and markets. Good place to learn lots, as long as you're comfortable with working at a 'boring insurance company'. Some good people and generally friendly environment.

Cons

Well, we got completely hammered the last few months so it will be a tough few months going forward. Overall, the crisis was not managed all that well with lots of employees afraid for their jobs and livelihoods. More generally, very strict and conservative corporate culture; the bureaucracy can be frustrating at times. The office politics can also be irritating when they arise. Maybe it's just because I work in marketing where people gossip, but there is too much backstabbing talk which poisons productivity with its negativity.

Pros

The insurance industry is a relatively stable industry. There is always a need for insurance. I think that Allstate has a very good balance between size and opportunities for advancement.

Cons

I think the advantages of working in the insurance industry are also a disadvantage at Allstate. The company is very large. As a result, it can be easy to become lost in a large company within the insurance industry. Allstate is one of the largest insurers in the insurance industry. There is sometimes a need for more individualization in some of the largest components. There is often a need to be recognized as an indidvidual.

Pros

A great place to get started in your career and there are opportunities there after for development. The company has a strong reputation in the market so get to have on your resume if choose to leave.

Cons

One the best things about AIG is also it's worse - it's size. As we all know now AIG is a monster and so you and your role is less significant. The company is very big into it's corporate culture which can we very hard to tolerate. E.g. It seems that many of the employees would do anything for the company. Now that AIG has been nationalized I don't feel any pride in working for them anymore.
