Created in 2008, the Inria center at the University of Lille employs 360 people, including 305 scientists in 16 research teams. Recognized for its strong involvement in the socio-economic development of the Hauts-De-France region, the Inria center at the University of Lille maintains a close relationship with large companies and SMEs. By fostering synergies between researchers and industry, Inria contributes to the transfer of skills and expertise in the field of digital technologies, and provides access to the best of European and international research for the benefit of innovation and businesses, particularly in the region.
For over 10 years, the Inria center at the University of Lille has been at the heart of Lille's university and scientific ecosystem, as well as at the heart of Frenchtech, with a technology showroom based on avenue de Bretagne in Lille, on the EuraTechnologies site of economic excellence dedicated to information and communication technologies (ICT).
This PhD position is based in the Loop research team, based in the Inria Centre at University of Lille. It is one of the component of the research project of the Loop team on more dynamic and engaging research documents. As such, possible collaborations with, and visits to, University of Tokyo (Japan) and University of Waterloo (Canada) can be expected.
This PhD will propose new paradigms of synchronous and asynchronous presentations (such as scientific talks, company internal presentations and briefings, museum exhibitions) that are more interactive, engaging and entertaining for the audience. It will also propose novel systems to accomodate these new paradigms.
Presentations are one of the primary communication media used nowadays by researchers, employees, educators, and content creators, whether during live talks, meetings, recorded video presentations, or shared asynchronous media. However, current presentation technologies still provide limited opportunities for rich audience interaction, collaborative engagement, and adaptive viewing experiences.
This project will explore how interactive technologies can enable novel forms of interaction around presentations and presentation videos. It will investigate new systems that support audience participation during live presentations, and socially enriched viewing of asynchronous presentation content, and interactive mechanisms that allow viewers to navigate, annotate, discuss, and revisit presentation materials in more meaningful ways. The research will also reflect on how future presentation infrastructures and media formats can better accommodate these new interactive experiences. It will also explore how integrating knowledge about the audience (epxertise, perceptual skills) can further improve these experiences.
The candidate should have a strong background in Human-Computer Interaction or a related research field. Strong programming skills and solid experience in prototyping interactive systems, especially in extended reality contexts, are required. A strong interest in interactive software development and design is also essential. Creativity, independence, team spirit, and communication skills are valuable assets. Proficiency in technical and scientific English is required as well.
The candidate will join a vibrant and multicultural group of young researchers at Loki. Our students typically come from diverse backgrounds (Canada, China, India, Iran, etc.). Speaking French is not required to integrate into our research group.
Monthly Gross Salary: 2 300 €
