I’ve been referred twice internally for non-consulting roles and both resulted in discussions with HR. Typical interview about your background, why the role, with one or two soft skills questions. Interviews with Hr were always positive and left me with the feeling that a follow up interview would happen but then I was disappointed rejected without much explanation or feedback. Based on who they end up hiring for the role - it’s clear that they have no interest in diversity and base candidates on schools and networks (even for Operational roles). Despite being a perfect match on qualifications, you have no idea why you’re rejected.
