It was thorough, but it really depends on the project and the source of funds for your research. The more standard way is to present a dossier and undergo a "concours" based on merit, CV, marks, and a few interview stages. In my case it consisted directly of two interviews with the project's PI (within the d'Alembert laboratory) and it did not take long to reach a decision.
