I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at ABB (Chennai) in Jul 2009
Interview
I initially received a call for an on the spot preliminary assesment interview. There were a few basic questions on Power Grid and Trasmission domain. At the end of the call, I was asked to attend interview at Chennai office the following week. My first impression of the office was that of a thoroughly professional organization, with attention to following certain values. Everyone, right from the security desk, to the housekeeping staff were extremely couteous and helpful. The interview was also different form anything I've previously attended. There were 2 managers from the European headquarters present. We started with a short presentation of the company, the specific subsidiary were the position was vacant, details of the required candidate etc. The interview itself never felt like a interrogation session, as is common in Indian companies. The result was announced on the same day.

So one needed to demonstrate solid experience to be able to describe various workflows, design principles etc.
